As part of New York City’s vision to transform LaGuardia International Airport into a world-class transportation hub, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), together with LaGuardia Gateway Partners (LGP) launched the Terminal B redevelopment project at the airport in June 2016.

Under an innovative public-private partnership — the largest in the United States — LaGuardia Gateway Partners will design, build, operate and maintain the Central Terminal B facility. The public-private partnership contract includes taking over operations of the existing Central Terminal Building and designing, building, financing, operating and maintaining a new replacement terminal for a lease term through 2050. The airport will improve the traveling experience for millions of people and it will be a major economic generator for the region.

The redevelopment project, which involved complete reconstruction of Terminal B, also known as central terminal building (CTB), is said to be the first-of-its-kind complete redevelopment of a US airport in more than two decades.

The first of its kind in the world, LaGuardia Central will feature dual pedestrian bridges spanning active aircraft taxi lanes, allowing for improved aircraft circulation and gate flexibility.

LaGuardia Airport opened to the public in 1964 with a design capacity of 8 million annual air passengers. Today, Terminal B annually serves more than 14 million passengers.

CellGain Wireless was selected to provide the DAS for Public Safety and facility communications.  By working closely with the customer, the agencies, and various contractors throughout the project, CellGain was able to exceed all deliverable expectations.

CellGain is proud and honored to be a part of this epic project.  The CellGain FTAS will help provide safety and security to the millions of passengers LaGuardia serves every year.

CellGain’s proprietary Fiber-to-Antenna System (FTAS) is deployed to provide seamless in-building coverage to emergency personnel.  The system is designed for reliability with full redundancy, overlapping coverage, with verified RSSI levels throughout both front-of-house and back-of-house areas.

The system has 2 head-ends located in MDF rooms that connect to the agency radios and over-the-air (OTA) bi-directional amplifiers (BDA’s) which are located in different areas of the airport.  Each agency has multiple channels and all of the channels and frequency bands are combined into the head-end.

The fiber backbone from the head-ends is routed in high density 144 strand fiber-optic cable to IDF closets.

In the IDF closets, the 144 strand fiber is separated in fiber distribution panels.

Then the individual connections are made to the AR’s with hybrid fiber-optic cable with multiple fiber strands and 2 copper wires for DC powering of the AR’s.

The FTAS Active Remotes (AR’s) are mounted above the ceiling.  This maintains the beautiful aesthetics of the new terminal without intrusive antennas.

Providing a comprehensive end-to-end turn-key solution, CellGain Wireless was able to exceed all delivery dates on this project.

Each agency’s requirements were met along with NFPA requirements along with the desires of the partners involved.

Have a safe flight!
